General Information :
Habit – Cliber, spreads extensively. Branches – Slender, more or less scabrous and woolly, tendrils are 2-4 fitd. Leaves – 7.5 cm long and 5 cm wide, ovate-oblong, cordate, acute tip, sinuate-denote, not lobed, rigid, rough on both the surfaces petiole is 2 cm long.

Benefits :

Being ruchikara.Deepana and pachana due to its tiktarasa and ushnaveerya and being amajatrishnanigrahana, anulomana, pittasarakakrimighna and dushtakaphnashana, it should be used in aruchi, agnimandya, ajeerna, trishna, amlapitta, yakridvikaras, kamala, arsha and krimis. Its root being a drastic purgative and leaf and fruit aransana (mild purgative),they are used in the above ailments to expel doshas.

Kustha (Skin diseases)

Decoction prepared from patola (Tricosanthesdioica), Khadira (Acacia catechu), Nimba (Azadirachtaindica), Amalaki (Terminalia belorica) and krisnavetra if taken will alleviate all kinds of Kustha (Skin diseases).

Jwara (Fever)

Decoction of Patola (Tricosathesdioica) and Dhanyaka (Coriandrumsativum) if taken with ghee alleviates Jwara (Fever). It is also Appetizer, Expectorant, Carminative, Digestant and Purgative.

Visarpa (Erysipelas)

Decoction prepared from leaves of Patola (Tricosanthesdioica). Mudga and Amalaki (Emblica officinalis) taken with ghee is an effective remedy in case of Visarpa (Erysipeals).

Formulation (Kalp):

Patoladyaquatha, patoladyachoorna

Dosage :

Svarasa – 10 to 20 ml.
Decoction : 50 to 100 ml as shodhana and 20 to 30 ml as shamana.

Chemical Composition :

The fruit and the leaves contain proteins .lipid. Carbohydrate and minerals, the seed contains a redish green oil.

Research Corner :

The present study evaluated the protective effect of the triterpenoid enriched fraction from T. dioica root (CETD) against experimentally induced acute inflammatory ascites in Wistar albino rats. The CETD demonstrated significant (P<0.01) reduction of ascetic fluid formation in a dose- dependent manner as compared with control. Bhattacharya S, Haldar PK. The triterpenoid fraction from Trichosanthesdioica root suppresses experimentally induced inflammatory ascites in rats.

Here's A Quick Way To Solve A Problem with Manya Basti Treatment

Manya means neck and Basti is the treatment in which the oil is made to be worn. So the treatment in which the oil is made to be worn on the cervical or the neck region is called Manyabasti.

Benefits :
 
1. It is useful in Cervical Spondylosis.
2. It is useful in Cervical Pain.
3. It is beneficial in the numbness of neck region and tingling sensation and numbness of hands.

Poorvakarma (Pre-Procedure) of Basti
 
Do thorough examination of the patient before administration of basti. Examination will help to give idea of what kind of oil or decoction should be used to give basti and also to decide the proportion of the medicine to be used. Once the patient is mentally and physically fit to take basti he should be given ext snehan and swedan. Swedan should be given mainly on lower abdomen and waist.

Pradankarma (Main Procedure) of Basti
 
After completion of snehan and swedan the patient is advised to sleep in left lateral position with left leg extended and right leg flexed close to the abdomen. The head of the patient should rest on his left hand. After giving proper position the oil is applied to the anus of the patient .Then the catheter which is on syringe or enema pot is slowly pushed in the rectum.

Then the decoction or oil is slowly allowed to pass in the large intestine. See that the medicine administered in the basti is passing properly through the anal canal.While administering the medicine tell the patient to take deep breath.

After completion of the basti administration slowly remove the catheter form the patient’s body. Tell him to remain in the same position for ½ minute. And then slowly tap on the buttocks of the patient. Then tell him to getup. The basti should come out of the patient’s body within the mentioned time.

(Post Procedure) of Basti
 
Once the basti is out of the patient’s body he is advised to rest for a while and then given bath with warm water. And then he is given light diet. Till the patient is on basti regimen the patient should not sleep in the day time, not to talk loudly, not to have sex,do not drink cold water, an have bath with cold water, do not roam in hot sun or don’t get exposed to cool wind. All these restrictions should be followed double to the number of days the basti is administered.
